Sunil Dargani - Lead Consultant, QMV

What do you do at QMV and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?

I’m a lead consultant specialising in digital and integration domains. With 20+ years of experience in financial services and across most facets of technology and business, you could come to me for anything.

I can help with your business problems and opportunities, articulate use cases for emerging technologies, explore cloud together or just be a sounding board over coffee or lunch. If the topic lies outside my area of expertise or experience, I can always direct you to a suitable QMV consultant who can help.

In collaboration with one of our directors, I am currently developing a digital transformation and data strategy for an overseas client. They are undergoing a significant business transformation and are on a journey to improve retirement outcomes for their members. I feel privileged for the opportunity to help them on the digital and data subset.

What is one professional skill you are currently working on/or have completed?

On one of my previous client engagements, I had the opportunity to design their business function for customer engagement. The design scope included people, process and technology, supported by cutting edge capabilities including AI driven process automation, virtual assistants, chatbots, and shift left strategies. We took a human centred design approach, with cloud (AWS) playing a key role to enable the business requirements. This hands on approach for the business architecture and solution design, peaked my interest in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Long story short, I ended up self-skilling in various capabilities of AWS, which lead to me acquiring a formal “AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner” certification. I’m looking forward to continue on this journey with end goal being an AWS Certified Solutions Architect.

Who or What has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

This might sound a bit out of left field, but the fictional character of Hawkeye Pierce (played by Alan Alda) in M*A*S*H has been big influence on my working life. He was a surgeon in the US military who couldn’t care less about the military’s hypocrisy or bureaucratic processes. He had the courage to challenge authority when it interfered with what he valued most – human life.

When it came to being a surgeon, he was top of his game, would fight tirelessly to save your life, open to continued learning and under his supervision as the chief surgeon the M*A*S*H 4077 unit achieved one of the highest life saving rates of human life. He was a man of the people, and would find innovative and creative ways to help his work colleagues irrespective of their ranks or positions in the hierarchy. As impressive as that sounds, as soon as he was out of his scrubs (off work), he was the biggest goof of all time.

Similar to his character, I believe I give my best to work when in my “scrubs”, cut out the noise and work collaboratively with my fellow QMV’ers and clients. This also helps me practice a good work-life balance once out of my scrubs!

What behaviour or personality trait is most important to you, and why?

Openness and honesty - being open and honest is what I value highly, and strive to demonstrate it every day. Bad news is bad news. Not everything goes smoothly and in the event we hit roadblocks or rough terrain, I believe we should be able to surface it as an open and honest conversation (without fear) and direct the energy towards a resolution. I personally gravitate towards people and teams that understand and demonstrate these qualities, as I believe it helps to achieve the absolute best outcome and a pleasant journey to get there, irrespective of the challenges that lie along the way.

Growth mindset – I believe in constant learning and challenging oneself. Whether be it at work or in your personal life. To be perfectly honest, I have my comfort zones but I don’t mind being comfortably uncomfortable if it means given an opportunity to expand my skillset. This has steered me well in my career and provided me with ample opportunities along the way.

What’s one thing that surprised you about working at QMV?

I love working for QMV and it’s the family feel that has been a pleasant surprise. Many organisations state they have a flat structure and open door policy, but QMV is the first place where I have seen this being genuinely practised. I can approach anyone in the QMV Group, including the leadership team and the directors, and seek guidance or use them as a sounding board. It’s a close knit team with a genuine comradery amongst the QMV family members!
