Jane McKinnon - Practice Lead, QMV

1.  What is your role at QMV and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?

As a lead consultant at QMV, I work on a variety of client projects most often in project management. While my expertise is successor fund transfers and remediation, I’ve also recently lead product changes and member consent transfers.

Back at QMV head office, I am also a practice lead, which means I manage a team of consultants and play my part in leading the consulting business.

I am sought out for the learnings I can share from previous project experiences, to workshop an idea or just as a friendly sounding board!

2.  What is one professional skill you are currently working on / or have completed?

I am working on diversity of my expertise by seeking out new experiences. My preferred domain is transitions and I have led a number of SFT’s with a member service focus. I am currently building that out working on a fund merger and challenging myself in the investment / custodian side of the project.

There is so much to learn and this is a career long pursuit.

3.  Who or what has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

Looking back, the leaders I admire most are the ones that look out for their people and share their own personal experiences, particularly the hard ones where they have learnt their biggest lessons. I’ll never forget the leader who a few years ago, saw me go through a very difficult time at work – and tapped me on the shoulder to let me know he’d seen that battle, and admired how I handled it.

He encouraged me to share it with others, which I ultimately did. The biggest learning from that experience, was the importance of self-reflection and the value of lessons learned.

I now always carve out time for myself, particularly at the end of a client engagement or delivery of a project to reflect on what I’ve added to my toolkit to reuse – and where I could seek more opportunities to learn.

4.  What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute to your success and why?

Listening to stakeholders, understanding what is important to them – and making sure that it is a key part of delivery.

5.  What is one thing that surprised you about working at QMV?

I was surprised at how quickly and easily it felt like I was part of the QMV family. While I can count on one hand the days I have worked in person in the QMV office I immediately felt seen, understood and valued. I can just be myself and that is really refreshing. I also don’t feel at all bound by hierarchy and that I can reach out to anyone for anything.
