Gabriela began her career in financial services in the United States, where she later practised as a lawyer with special focus on insurance and complex business matters. Since relocating to Australia, Gabriela has been involved in a broad range of projects assisting superannuation funds with regulatory compliance, risk management and governance issues. Her forward thinking perspective, enthusiasm and interpersonal skills are guaranteed to make an impact on any organisation.

What do you do at QMV and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?

As a consultant primarily focused on regulatory compliance, governance, risk and advisory I help clients with projects relating to superannuation successor fund transfers, third party arrangements, including tenders and contracts, and more generally operationalising and improving their business processes associated with regulatory requirements.

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on/or have completed?

Having been a lawyer in the United States prior to moving to Australia, I recently completed the bridging requirements for admission into the legal profession here in Australia. Additionally, I believe, the ever-increasing accessibility, depth and quality of data available to organisations presents an opportunity for optimising the world of financial services. I intend to add data analytics alongside the intricacies of data governance to my knowledge toolkit.

Who or What has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

Henry David Thoreau once wrote “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately” – As with life, I approach my work in a deliberate manner, making a cognisant effort to approach each matter with new energy and fresh eyes focused on not only the detail (as us legal/analytical oriented minds tend to do), but also the wider more practical implication of my work.

What behaviour or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?

Ambition and humility – I generally strive to be a better version of myself each day (even if it currently involves sitting in my work nook at home, wearing track pants and sipping on multiple cups of hot tea for most of my day).

What’s one thing that surprised you about working at QMV?

The level of collaboration. Everyone at QMV is not only incredibly knowledgeable in varying subject matters ranging from very technical coding to high level business operations, but the organisation fosters an open-door culture where each person – directors and consultants alike – is always open to talking through an issue and offering a different perspective or specific expertise on how to solve an issue.
